People have been recording otherworldly voices for centuries. Both magnetic tape and digital recording devices work. It's less about the equipment and more about where you record.

Are you interested in recording E.V.P? Almost any digital recorder will suffice; the simpler the kit the better.

Anyone can record E.V.P.

How we record E.V.P.

The device I have used for the majority of the recordings on this site is an Olympus VN-5500. It's an extremely simple bit of kit which records, saves to internal storage and plays back. What I like about this device is that there are no radio components within it. This rules out any kind of radio transmission that could interfere with the samples we take.

We take the recorder to our chosen location and set it down on a flat surface. We then record in sixty second increments, taking as many samples as we like. I prefer not to ask questions or disturb and will mostly just initiate the recording session in silence. The recorder I use is very sensitive, so we have to be very quiet to get a decent sample.

How we analyse E.V.P.

Once we have our recorded samples, we transfer them onto a computer for analysis. The recorder we use has to be directly played back and re-recorded to the computer with an aux cable, as the recorder's internal memory cannot be removed.

There are plenty of programs that can anaylse your recordings. We like to use a mixture of Adobe Audition and Audacity.

Once we have the sounds on the computer, we will listen to the full recordings at different volumes to see if anything can be heard. If we think we've found something, we will isolate the sample and begin removing noise from it. We do this by taking a sample of quiet from the same clip and then we apply the noise removal to remove any sound above that threshold.

That leaves us with the important bits and we can then determine the cause of the sound heard. If we're lucky, it will be a voice.

The only other modification we make after this step is amplification for easier hearing.

What's the catch?

Capturing disembodied voices is rare. You'll notice that the recordings on this site are chronologically spaced out with years in between most samples.

Lucky for us in Buckinghamshire, there are plenty of historical places that provide us with data. But the key is to be persistant, to keep getting out and recording and analysing. The majority of visits we make result in no E.V.P. being found. This is a reality of this kind of investigation.
