The Hartley Asylum - WIP

The Hartley Asylum was a modification for Half-Life 2 Episode 2.

Its development was halted in favor of Entropy : Zero.

The player assumes the role of Joseph Oswin, a local writer. Joseph must traverse the abandoned asylum to find his friend Natalie White and expose the crazed owner, Darren Samson.

It's a full singleplayer experience and focuses on building an atmosphere and maintaining an interesting narrative. Many mechanics have been borrowed from the Ghosthunt series to make this mod what it is.

This mod couldn't exist without the feedback I have recieved from the Ghosthunt trilogy.

I believe that this mod would be an excellent candidate for virtual reality.

Design Principles

  • A medium length singleplayer campaign

  • Similar mechanics to the Ghosthunt trilogy but more linear

  • Various randomised events

  • Retain a compelling narrative

  • Lots of custom assets

Production

Misc. Hartley development Images

Production of Hartley Asylum was halted late 2015.

Despite this, content is already quite substantial, with around five completed maps in the current build. You can play them as part of the official Ghosthunt mod here.

I have kept to my traditional methods of development with this project. Because of that, this modification requires Half-Life 2 and both of its episodes to run correctly.

Keeping the experience singleplayer allows me to tailor events and scares on a more granular level.
